"Souls dwell in printers' type." --Joseph Ames

There is so much to be said about the process of letterpress. Starting with the care given while listening and learning from the client, to designing a piece that speaks of their vision, to the crafted precision that is taken in careful preparation for print and on to the motion and time poured over these time tested presses to ensure that the message first conceived is the message that is truly received. We hope you enjoy the process with us!

Here is a stationery piece that we had the pleasure of printing for The Rocket Company. Though they are simple in design, they communicate quite a little more than a digital or offset printed piece to the person receiving a hand written note on one of these.

When our little boy was turning 1 we could not think of any better way to announce it than to design and print his invites. The party was a kite theme so we had to make sure the invites matched up perfectly. One of our favorite aspects were the clouds. Instead of printing the clouds into the cards we instead printed the sky allowing the clouds to be pillowy in texture and white from the color of the stock.

Printer’s Specs:

Invitation Size: 5″x7″

Paper: Crane Lettra Fluorescent White 220#

Inks: 3/0 – Rubber Based
– Custom mixed 2 shades of 2 shades of blue and red

Finishing:
– trim to finished size

Notes: Envelopes were equally as beautiful (not pictured). A7 size with the kite tailing from the front to back flap with our return address on the back flap centered.

Our sister company 6 of Four Photography was looking to freshen their look a little. It was important that we design a cohesive elegant look that their clients expect, while giving a new, unique feel. They wanted to touch their clients with pieces that were consistent from business cards when first meeting someone, to a new stationery when giving someone a handwritten note to gift tags with the products they delivered.

The key to any business that desires to stand head-and-shoulder above the competition is strong branding and solid identity. The relationships built on that is the follow up to insure that not only does a business get the work they are looking for but they continue to give their clients consistent results they hired that company for.

We did a couple of fun things with their pieces that we would like to share with you all. A few common elements we did when designing it was a floral pattern all the pieces shared. This pattern was a repeating pattern that could be used to line the edges of a piece or fill an area a whole area from edge to edge and could fit well when designing new pieces down the road. While printing they debated on doing a blind deboss or printing with something. In the end they decided to use a varnish to give the piece a slight sheen to the color a bit. Read all about it in the Printer’s Specs below the images!

Printer’s Specs:

Business Cards

Size: 3.5″x2″

Paper: Crane Lettra Pearl 330#
– duplex 1 – 220# with 1 – 110#

Inks: 2/1
– Cool Grey 8 (front and back)
– High Gloss Varnish

These were a fun venture. They wanted something different, while maintaining the same shape of the common business card. Along with the unique floral pattern and using a varnish in that pattern we suggested going thicker than our heaviest 220# cotton weight stock. We did not want to go too thick because then it will just wreak havoc on our presses and do more damage than good. We now have this ultra 330# thick card that really stands out! Sure to grab anyone’s attention.

Stationery

Size: 4.5″x6.25″

Paper: Crane Lettra Pearl 220#

Inks: 2
– Cool Grey 8
– High Gloss Varnish

Envelopes: Matching paper and inks, A6 size

Why must stationery be boring? We used the repeating pattern to go along the top with an inspiring slogan that created. No name, just the slogan to give the right touch. Then on the envelope we printed that same patter along the top of the back flap along with their return address on the body of the back of the envelope.

Slideshow Cards

Size: 4.25″x5.5″

Paper: Crane Lettra Pearl 220#

Inks: 1/1
– Cool Grey 8 (front and back)

Envelopes: Matching paper and ink on front centered, A2 size

They were using these to deliver information about an item to their clients so they communicated to us that the envelope was going to be in a package of some sort. That made printed the envelope a fun idea and then the card inside to info of the slideshow they created on one side and the repeating pattern with varnish on the back that bled on all four sides.

Gift Tags

Size: 2″x1″

Paper: Crane Lettra Pearl 220#

Inks: 2/0
– Cool Grey 8
– High Gloss Varnish

Finishing:
– Hole drill with grommet and tied a cotton twine laced with a metallic gold threading

These are fun! Short little tags to go around products they delivered to give the nice finishing touch it needed. They had a nice cotton and metallic twine with that slogan on the stationery to bring it all together.

3 Piece Gift Set

Overall Sizes: 5″x5″

Paper: Crane Lettra Pearl 110# & 220#

Inks: 2
– Cool Grey 8
– High Gloss Varnish

Finishing:
– die cutting and assemble frames

Finally these pieces are the perfect gifts for their clients. They collaborated with us when we were creating ones like these frames for all of our retail clients. We used that famous floral pattern with varnish and die cut a circle tag with their slogan. Then grommeted the hole in the tag and tied that metallic twine.

What better way to share the message of your child’s birth with a letterpress keepsake announcement. When our son was born we knew we wanted to share his birth with our friends and family using the preserving legacy of letterpress. We had our friend Liz Chai design these pieces and she really captured what we were looking for. Enjoy!

Printer’s Specs:

Announcement Size: 5″x7″

Paper: Crane Lettra Fluorescent White 220#

Inks: 3/2 – Rubber Based

Finishing:
– trim to finished size
– rounded corners

Notes: I wished we had taken a picture of the back. There were two colors that bled over the edges with the pattern. Love having a pattern/design that does that to really engage the recipient while holding their piece.
